When I set out to design the Tropical Trouble 3lb beetleweight kit, the goal was simple: take the lessons learned from winning the 2024 MRCA Championship with Pipeline Punch and placing in the Top 8 at NHRL, and package them into a fully 3D-printable platform that any builder can maintain on a $180 Bambu Lab A1 Mini.
Why 100% 3D-Printed Construction?
Traditional billet aluminum or carbon-fiber beetleweight kits are expensive to machine and punishing when a spare frame rail gets bent mid-tournament. By designing Tropical Trouble around a multi-zone TPU chassis with cast 45A Vytaflex urethane wheels and a 6" Repeat Robotics 2812 hubmotor spinner (217 MPH tip speed), builders can:
- Print replacement chassis, uprights, wheel guards, and forks overnight before an event.
- Modify fork geometry in CAD to counter specific opponents without waiting on a waterjet service.
- Keep the total ready-to-fight robot build cost around $440.
